“I hate the movie industry [because] if I make a bad comic, it does not cost a hundred million dollars, which is the budget of an emergent small third world African nation. And this is money that could have gone to alleviating some of the immense suffering in this world but has instead gone to giving bored, apathetic, lazy, indifferent Western teenage boys another way of killing 90 minutes of their interminable and seemingly pointless lives.” -Alan Moore
Small world
Had a brief exchange with Dave Sim online today, my first interaction with him in a decade. Turns out he was in North Adams this past Veteran’s Day, just a few blocks from my house at the war memorial. How odd!

This is the best — THE BEST — analysis of everything that is wrong not only with the comic book direct market and the big two publishers, but the lame ass movements by women who worship at the altar even as they try and tear it down. I cast my vote — I entirely, completely, wholeheartedly agree with the summation from the Comics Journal blog and my suggestion is to just ignore superhero comics and laugh at what they are missing out on in the wider world of “market.” I have long argued that superhero comics need to return to being kid entertainment in order to nurture new markets and, also, return to making any damn sense at all. But the better solution is to ignore them and pass on the better comics that do exist that are kid friendly — Robot Dreams, Houdini the Handcuff King, Laika, Bone, and plenty of others out there — thus ensuring that one day, those kids will read good literature in the form of comics, people like Dan Clowes and Bryan Talbot and Matt Kindt. Besides, if you must buy superhero comics, go out and buy the collections of the good old stuff — Showcase Presents, that sort of thing. Don’t join fandom — be an independent operator.

Reefer ain’t safe
For the lungs.
Actually, I remember reading something about this years back, but here’s a new study that shows that one joint is worth 20 cigarettes in terms of lung cancer and your risk for it rises almost 6 times for a people who smoke one joint a day for 10 years.
I’m not a pot smoker, but I know plenty of ‘em.

Blessed be he who doctors
Doctor Who has been nominated for a Christian award. Pretty good for a show conceived of and largely written by a radical atheist homosexual who actually DOES have an agenda!
Anyhow, it was for the episode “Gridlock,” which was enormously silly and whatever, but did have one same sex elderly couple and even an interspecies couple with kids!
But it was very anti-drug and anti-evil bugs.

Arlo hearts Ron
I link to Greg who links to this story in which Arlo Guthrie endorses Ron Paul. Pretty amazing. I think I can officially close the already barely-opened door on Mr. Guthrie, since there’s no sign that this is a satire. I mean, if I could tolerate his music, sure, I’d overlook this one, but hell.

We went down to Greylock Arts in Adams today and Todd was nice enough to walk us through his exhibit - he’s a really nice guy doing really neat things and I highly recommend locals checking his stuff out. He’s funny and clever and there’s a whole lot to him (hint: he will be featured in next weeks arts section of the paper - which, by the way, is now on Fridays and called “Entertainment” again . . . because that’s how things happen . . . )
You can also check out Todd’s own Web site for some samples of what he has showing at Greylock. Todd is a professor at the world’s coolest school — the NYU Interactive Technologies Program, which sadly didn’t exist when I went there . . .
Logan’s Run TV show
Who’d have thought it? I watched the first episode tonight and really dug it. I mean, it’s a bit silly, but fun and kind of weird. I’ll watch more. And to think I turned it off after 15 minutes when I was a kid.
