Having been witness to, and victim of, many burning and exploding things, all I can say is ouch.

My most fortunate serious burn was courtesy of a 700 degree pizza oven and a slippery floor. Fortunately it was on the 4th of July and the entire burn unit staff at the local hospital was ready and rarin' to go. After a big syringe of Demerol and some weird chemical bath for my arm, there was hardly any scarring or pain, but I was pretty stoned for the next day or so.

I have heard of one case of someone being killed a few years back by flying shrapnel when a can of tomato paste was accidentally dropped in a 350 degree deep fryer and no one bothered to fish it out before it overheated.

I have to agree Siskel - there were way too many elements from the past two (and more) seasons all put together. It was almost as if the script writer had a special Doctor Who script ideas magnet set to put this special together (sort of like magnetic poetry):

"Let's see...'cute alien', 'cute lady', 'potential companion who gets killed','aliens invade earth'...nonononono....done before. Put that away....'earth in danger', YEA that's it! That hasn't been done before."

The whole "develop strong characters just to kill them" is kind of getting old too. I liked the red alien too...the fat couple seemed a little forced....that and it feels more and more like Tennant is channeling Marlon Brando from The Wild One "I travel ah-lone."

I'm looking forward to the next series too...hopefully they'll do some original stuff this time around.

Blade Runner -- It's not as good as it should be, given the esteem in which it's held, but I like it. I like the look of the world -- dirt and rain and noodle shops and flying cars. For me, the most interesting thing about Blade Runner -- something it shares with Brazil, actually -- is that it's a story that just won't stay told; it's constantly being retweaked and retooled. I don't see that as a failure, but as a sign that the pieces can be reassembled for better or for worse. [For what it's worth in the case of Brazil, Gilliam's cut of Brazil is the definitive one; I assume the new final cut of Blade Runner will bring some manner of closure as well.]

Nirvana -- I've written elsewhere about the fact that for years I couldn't stand Nirvana. I've come around slightly, but still think they are highly overrated.

The Matrix -- eh, if you ignore the seond and thrid movies, and just watch the first one as a pastiche of Hong Kong wirework, cyberpunk, and stoner epistemology, it's a perfectly decent way to kill two hours and change. I ended up sitting through all of them, but I only watched the second and third because a high school friend of mine did effects work on the films, and I wanted to actually see his name in the credits.

Led Zeppelin -- I get why they hold the position they do, and I certainly won't run screaming from the room should a Zepplin song start playing. On the other hand, I can't imagine saying, "I'm in the mood to listen to some music, and I think a bit of Zepplin would do me a treat."

Family Guy -- I'm 100% with you on this one. Don't get it, never have.

Will Smith -- To be honest, I don't give Will Smith enough thought in my day to day existence that liking or not liking him ever enters my mind. I won't skip a film because he's in it, and generally enjoy films he is in; I can't say whether that's due to or in spite of his performance.
